Nothing really happens in this city: Placing sun behind a bird (2024)
This performance was initiated with a short footage of me following bird calls in an open field surrounded by trees. The footage involved me starting from the center of the field and reacting to and chasing the bird calls continuously for 5 minutes. The camera was set at a distance at my eye level, and the trace of my chase was recorded with a GPS tracking app named Nike Running Club.
The recorded trace represented the shadow left behind me, created by my perception and the bird’s song. The imaginary image of the shadow behind me grew larger as I walked closer to the singing birds.
The trace, or the image of the shadow caused by the bird and myself, visible only as graphics in the app, was brought to real life by placing the sun behind the bird.
Two shadows—one from the sun and one from the call—were eclipsed into one and were captured by the camera.
